"Delirios de amor"
was a Spanish television series, and Antonio starred in one
episode. It is astonishing to North Americans because Antonio's
episode is primarily about sex -- gay sex -- and the plot
and character development seem to be entirely secondary to
the sex scenes, which are quite explicit. In this television
show Antonio portrays a young gay police officer who is assigned
to get information about a wealthy criminal so he can be charged
with offenses. Antonio attends a party at the man's s house
deliberately looking gorgeous in a black shirt and white jacket.
Needless to say, the criminal soon spots him, seduces him,
and the two become lovers. What's a young cop in love to do?
He writes his report but agonizes about submitting it. Instead,
he shows it to his lover and the two plan their escape not
aware that the criminal's house has been bugged by the police
who don't seem to trust their young colleague. Or is this
their way of getting rid of a criminal and a corrupt (and
gay) cop at the same time? As they seal their love with a
kiss, police cars pull up to the house.
This is a very steamy
little television show. And it seems that the show is simply an
excuse to show Antonio nude (full frontal), deep kissing a man,
in bed having lusty sex with him, and wearing tight leather pants.
According to Sharon C. the concept of a family viewing hour is unknown
in Spain, and even "Law of Desire" is shown (uncut) in
the early evening. We shouldn't expect to ever see "Delirios
de amor" on television here.
From Paulo in Spain:
"Delirios de amor" was a TV show produced by Luis Eduardo
Aute, a politically-commited singer that was pretty popular here
during the 70s, especially between the most leftist circles; in
the last years he has started also a film production company, and
has produced, among others, an arthouse film called "The quince
tree sun", by the spanish filmmaker Victor Erice, that was
shown in Cannes some years ago (Erice is considered in Spain as
one of the best film directors, although he has directed only 3
films in 25 years). As far as I know, this TV show didn't have any
common plotline or characters; it was just a bunch of independent
stories with the common subject of love (especially the most "mad"
and uncommon variations of love). They were directed by some of
the best-known Spanish filmmakers of that time, and also had some
well-known actors (Antonio among them).
From what I remember,
this TV show wasn't exactly a big audience success, despite which
the Spanish TV ordered some new episodes two years later (around
1987-1988). One of them was directed by Ivan Zulueta, a Spanish
cult filmmaker that has made some rather disturbing and weird (but
really good) movies, and who had some serious problems with drugs
in that time; that episode was his first work in almost ten years.
"Fotogramas" published a small review about this episode
in their October 1988 issue recommending it; that review is about
the only reference of some length that I've found about "Delirios
de amor" in the magazine.
