Additonal Captures

Director: Bille August

Other Actors: Jeremy Irons, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Winona Ryder

This movie, based on the novel by Chilean writer Isabel Allende, narrates the story of three generations of the Trueba family in Chili between the years 1928 and 1973. A rupture is caused between the head of the family (Irons) and his wife (Streep) when their daughter (Ryder) falls in love with a native (Antonio) whose father works for the family. Antonio's character (Pedro) and Iron's character also wind up on opposing political parties with Antonio a leader of the freedom party. Throughout the movie Trueba tries to catch and kill Pedro who always manages to elude him. In the end, he helps to save the young man's life. An added twist is that Pedro is the father of Trueba's granddaughter.

Jeremy Irons had his first professional contact with Antonio two years before in Los Angeles during a screen test for The Mambo Kings. Irons played the role that eventually went to Assante. "Now that I have worked with Antonio," says Irons, "we have forged a true friendship. Antonio is a marvellous and a great actor, above all because he is gifted with an energy that overflows him and that goes out to the people. He loves his work and shows a tremendous passion. He is one of the most passionate actors I have ever known."

Meryl Streep agrees with Iron's assessment and further describes Antonio as "a very sensitive and intelligent person."
