“There are bits
of me in some of the characters, such as jealousy” “I’ve
got a deep and dark side which comes out in El Camino de los Ingleses.”
It happened, as Banderas
recounts, “as if I had been waiting for the novel before Soler wrote
it. And I believe that everything happens for a reason, although the reason
sometimes is very well hidden, but it is”. El
Mundo, Madrid, interview 19 November 2006
Antonio’s second foray into directing gave him the perfect opportunity
to film in his hometown of Malaga, Spain. The ‘coming of age in
the ‘70’s’ storyline also allowed him to cast many unknown
actors and work once again with his former co-star, Victoria Abril.
Based on the award winning novel of the same name by Malaga author Antonio
Soler, Ingleses is the story of a group of teenagers in Malaga
during the late 1970’s, centered around the experiences and changes
they undergo as they move towards adulthood. The historical move away
from the Franco regime, and its’ resulting freedoms, are also an
important part of the film.
Both Antonio and Soler, who also wrote the Ingleses screenplay,
have been quoted in the Spanish press as being extremely pleased by the
project, and their collaboration.
Miguelito Davila is a young person who is forced to spend several months
in the hospital due to a renal disease. There he meets a man of culture
who shows him the possibility of a better life and adventure through the
reading of poetry. Miguelito thinks that a day will come which will allow
him to leave his work in a small ironworks and become a poet. The storyline
involves his relationship with Luli and close friends Babirusa, Frontón
Alpaca and Moratalla who together embark on a path that will prove to
be crucial in their young lives.
The film received two Goya nominations for Best Actor and Best Adapted
Screenplay and will be featured at both the 2007 Berlin Film Festival
and the 2007 Sundance Film Festival under the English title “Summer
Rain”.
“I have worked from the absolute freedom - Banderas says, cleaning
my head of everything what has to do with the critic or the ticket office”.
24Horas, Madrid, 28 November 2006, from Ingleses
press conference
"I tried to cut
out those (restraints). I don't know if I've done it as a reaction to
the 17 years that I've spent working in Hollywood. Anyway, I'm not giving
up on those 17 years which undoubtedly gave me this possibility to buy
freedom." Reuters, 28 November 2006 Ingleses
press conference
"In a way I myself
am the natural enemy of this film, the typical good-looking guy who's
done a lot of commercial cinema," he said. "I've done it simply
from my own curiosity regarding film-making. An exercise in honesty.”
