Of Love
and Shadows is based on another novel by Chilean writer
Isabel Allende (the first had been The House of Spirits).
The film is set in Chile during a military coup in the 1970s.
Antonio plays an underground freedom fighter and photographer
who connects with a writer for a fashion magazine to expose
military corruption in the dictatorship of Pinochet. While
covering a story for the magazine the pair are witnesses to
the first disappearances in Pinochet's Chile.
The political difficulties
are secondary to the love story in this film and it contains a very
erotic love scene with Antonio and Jennifer Connelly. Says author
Allende, "I will always remember their embrace, the socks,
her small jersey, the naked body of Antonio and the translucent
night..."
