The Spy Kids
are back again! Using the very latest digital technology
and the thrill of the 3-D experience, secret agents Juni
(Sabara) and Carmen Cortez (Vega) are caught inside the
virtual reality world of a 3-D video game bringing the movie
going public along for the ride!
Carmen is pulled into
the game controlled by The Toymaker (Stallone) who is attempting
to control the youth of the world. Juni (who had been fired by
the OSS) enters the game in an attempt to save his sister and
calls upon his grandfather (Montalban) for help. The challenges
escalate as they move on to higher and higher levels within the
game, competing with other kids that they meet along the way.
Emily Osment and Matthew
O’Leary return as the Giggles kids. Rounding out the Giggles
family is Salma Hayek as their mother. Cameo performances include
Steve Buscemi, Bill Paxton, Allan Cumming, Mike Judge, George
Clooney, Holland Taylor, Cheech Marin and Danny Trejo. Screen
time for both Antonio and Carla Gugino was limited and repeatedly
referred to as ‘cameos’ by reviewers, although several
mentioned that Antonio appeared to be having a great time.
Rodriguez shot the
entire film with digital technology, making various elements
of the movie 3-D for the viewer who was able to experience
the special effects in a totally different way than the
earlier movies. The third (and likely last) in the series,
Spy Kids 3-D did not garner the stellar reviews of the first
two movies. However, a review by Sean Axmaker in the Seattle
Post Intelligencer probably sums it up best…”Robert
Rodriguez is without a doubt the biggest kid making movies
today and "Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over" is an entire
amusement park of a movie, powered by adolescent daydreams
and superhero fantasies and running on state-of-the-art
digital technology.”
