Once again Woody Allen delves into the complex and interconnected
lives of his various characters. The film centers around the core
family consisting of Alfie (Hopkins), Helena (Jones), their daughter
Sally (Watts) and her husband (Brolin).
After Alfie
and Helena divorce, he makes an attempt to regain his youth by marrying
a former prostitute, Charmaine (Punch). Things get complicated in
this relationship as he falls into financial trouble and Charmaine
turns up pregnant with questions as to paternity of the child.
Sally is in
the middle of a troubled marriage to Roy, a once successful writer,
who is focused only on hearing from his publisher regarding the
manuscript for his second book. Frustrated, she considers an affair
with Greg (Antonio) who just happens to be her boss at an art gallery.
She soon finds that her attraction is not reciprocated as he enters
into a relationship with a colleague.
As Roy frets
over not hearing from his publisher, he spies Dia (Pinto) from his
window and falls for her, eventually convincing her to break her
engagement to another man.
Woven through
the story is the fact that Helena has made a connection to a fortune
teller who is guiding her through the choices she has to make in
her life.
This film brings a blending of illusion and reality, loves and longing,
desires and failures.
